Ferdinand has finally accepted and Bulgaria finally has a monarch once again. But that doesn't mean his becoming Prince of Bulgaria will be easy. He needs to navigate a delicate international situation, dodge assassination attempts, and adapt to conditions in Sofia.

Timeline for this Episode

  • 1887, June 28th - The government of Vasil Radoslavov resigns in support of the candidacy of knyaz Alexander Battenberg. Succeeded by the cabinet of Constantine Stoilov.

  • 1887, July 29th - Ferdinand boards the steamer Orient on his way to Bulgaria.

  • 1887, August 1st - Ferdinand is crowned in Tarnovo.

  • 1887, August 20th - The government of Stefan Stambolov. His supporters gradually form the new governing Popular Liberal party with the newspaper “Freedom”.

  • 1887, August 30th - The martial law enforced after the 1886 coup is lifted.
